How We Make Handmade Ceramic Crockery at Our Khurja Factory

🏺 How We Make Handmade Ceramic Crockery at Our Khurja Factory

At India Ceramic, we believe that every piece of crockery tells a story — of skilled hands, ancient tradition, and timeless quality. As a trusted ceramic manufacturer in Khurja, our mission is to turn simple clay into elegant ceramic crockery that travels from our small town to kitchens and dining tables across the world.

Khurja, often called the “ceramic city of India,” has been at the heart of the country's pottery heritage for over 500 years. Today, we're proud to carry this legacy forward with a blend of traditional methods and modern craftsmanship that brings the best of handmade ceramic crockery to homes, restaurants, and retailers globally.

Let’s take you behind the scenes to show you exactly how we make our ceramic crockery from scratch, right here in our artisan-run unit in Khurja.

🌱 1. Selecting & Preparing the Clay

Creating premium crockery starts with the right clay. We use a refined mix of white clay and terracotta, sourced from local regions known for high-quality soil.

The clay undergoes:

  • Filtering for impurities
  • Natural aging with water
  • Manual kneading (called wedging) to soften and stabilize the texture

This careful process ensures the clay is workable, consistent, and suitable for shaping dinner plates, bowls, mugs, and serveware.

⚙️ 2. Shaping the Crockery – One Piece at a Time

Crockery is shaped using both traditional and modern techniques, depending on the product.

  • Hand-throwing on potter's wheel (for cups, bowls, lamp bases)
  • Plaster molds (for shaped plates, trays, saucers)
  • Slip-casting (to ensure uniform thickness in large batches)

Each item is inspected during shaping to ensure even walls, balanced weight, and smooth contours. No two handmade pieces are ever the same – and that is exactly what makes Khurja ceramics special.

🌬 3. Drying Naturally in Controlled Conditions

Once shaped, the greenware (unfired ceramic pieces) are placed in drying racks. They remain there for 24–72 hours depending on climate and product thickness.

Proper drying is critical. Uneven drying may cause:

  • Cracks during firing
  • Warping
  • Weak edges

Our facility in Khurja is equipped with temperature-controlled indoor drying zones, ensuring consistent drying year-round.

🔥 4. First Firing – Bisque Stage

After drying, the crockery is fired at around 900°C in large kilns. This stage converts clay into ceramic – strong, porous, and durable enough to withstand later glazing.

We use batch-fired electric and gas kilns, which allow even heat distribution, minimizing reject rates and improving sustainability.

✅ After the first firing, products are cooled and checked before the next step.

🎨 5. Glazing – The Signature Finish

What gives our handmade crockery its shine, color, and surface texture? It's all in the glaze.

We use:

  • Lead-free, food-safe glazes
  • Glossy, matte, and speckled finishes
  • Natural color palettes (white, beige, green, terracotta, cobalt blue)
  • Option for custom logo engraving or color matching for B2B clients

The glaze is applied by:

  • Dipping
  • Brushing
  • Spraying

Each item receives an even coat before firing again at a higher temperature.

🔥 6. Final Firing – Strength Meets Style

In the last firing stage, the glazed products are placed in the kiln at temperatures between 1000–1100°C.

This process:

  • Fuses the glaze to the ceramic
  • Adds scratch resistance
  • Provides a waterproof, glossy, or matte finish
  • Makes it microwave- and dishwasher-safe

Every piece of ceramic crockery is tested for:

  • Heat resistance
  • Glaze finish uniformity
  • Weight & stacking ability

Each batch is reviewed by our in-house quality control team before it moves to final packaging.
